GEGSLA

The near future will see a multitude of lunar missions through the efforts of both space agencies and commercial stakeholders. The current lack of coordination mechanisms for lunar activities presents a serious challenge to future missions and could lead to dangerous conflicts, especially in light of the increased global interest in specific areas like the lunar south pole. The need to preserve the peaceful uses of space, together with the desire to begin a new era of sustainable space exploration, urges the development of a common level playing field for upcoming lunar activities.

The “Global Expert Group on Sustainable Lunar Activities” (GEGSLA) has been created to this end by the Moon Village Association (MVA), as an independent activity hosted by MVA. The aim of the Group is to increase coordination mechanisms and individuate the present and future challenges of lunar missions, through informal discussions and sharing of information. GEGSLA is a multilateral informal forum involving experts from space agencies/government, as well as other stakeholders, such as representatives from industry, academia, scientists, and international organizations.

GEGSLA is embedded in the Moon Village Association (MVA), an international non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Vienna. The main objective of the MVA is the implementation of the Moon Village. The results of GEGSLA will pave the way for the implementation of the Moon Village

MVA fosters cooperation for existing or planned global moon exploration projects, whether public or private. MVA also fosters the implementation of the Moon Village and is creating international, national and regional networks to engage civil society around the world. MVA currently has over 200 members from more than 50 countries and 32 Institutional members around the globe, representing a diverse array of technical, scientific, cultural and interdisciplinary fields.

The Moon Village Association’s mission is unique, bridging together both spacefaring and non-spacefaring nations offering them the opportunity to play a role in its realization. There is no other organization on the international scene having such a mission.
