Lunar Human Physiology and Biology
Leader
The presence of gravity on Earth has had an integral effect on the development of life over billions of years and has shaped the anatomy and physiology of human beings. Exposure to microgravity has been shown to affect the entire body, causing numerous changes, such as a reduction in heart size and blood volume, disturbances of the neurological system, and decreases in bone density and muscle mass. These physiological changes can lead to undesirable health consequences and to operational difficulties, especially in emergency situations. However, little is known about human physiology in hypogravity environments, such as the Moon, other than some data collected during the Apollo program in the 1970s.
Consequently, the Working Group in Lunar Human Physiology and Biology aims to promote and highlight initiatives centered on the exploration of the Moon by humans, which is in alignment with the Artemis project that will see humans return to the Moon. This will be achieved through educational and outreach activities based on presentations and discussions with experts in areas related to the main theme of the WG, as well as with the establishment of research projects.
The goals are to:
- Advance the knowledge regarding human space exploration, in particular the Lunar environment;
- Promote inter- and multidisciplinary academic and scientific activities regarding exploration of the Moon by humans;
- Create awareness of the contribution of Lunar missions to the advancement of science in space and its benefits to terrestrial medicine and related fields;
- Motivate innovation in the area of human space exploration, considering Lunar missions, through debates and research/educational initiatives;
- Develop a network of professionals and students under the theme of the WG.
Planned activities
- Promotion of virtual events, such as webinars, panels and lectures regarding the theme of the WG;
- Motivating the involvement of international participants – speakers, researchers, professors, students;
- Establishing and conducting research related to human missions to the Moon, including lunar simulations on Earth;
- Creation of a network of people involved in areas related to the theme of the WG;
- Organization of a repository/archive of information regarding the theme of the WG, based on the activities and initiatives developed over the year;
- Conducting a regular update of the MVA webpage and relevant social media.
